Tasting Notes

Kenyan coffee has been on an upward trajectory for some time now, and to be honest, has turned into something of a roaster's dream. Their pride and expertise in sorting, grading, and processing delivers a highly uniform coffee that's ready to roast. Combine that with continued improvement in cup quality and you have a real winner. This particular lot is a fly crop, a smaller second harvest only possible in some regions due to weather.

The Farm

Located in Iveti, Machakos County, the Nbomano Station is the sole washing station supporting the Ngomano Farmer Cooperative Society. Machakos is actually a lesser known region than other highly competitive neighboring counties, but boasts the same level Ngomano Factory is the sole washing station in the Ngomano Farmer Cooperative Society (FCS). The producer group belongs to the Machakos Cooperative Union, an umbrella organization that represents 28 societies in the county and offers benefits to its member commonly provided by 3rd party service providers elsewhere in Kenya, including dry milling, farmer training, marketing, and subsidized farm inputs like pesticides, fertilizer, and fungicides.

The Cup

Quality Kenyan coffee can have a sort of Mexican summer cookout type of vibe for me. What I mean by that is you have this combination of tropical fruits — mango, guava, pinapple, but coupled by this richer, almost savory twist to the sweetness, which presents to me less of a tomato, which is commonly given to Kenyan and Yemen coffee, and more of a sweet-spice, in the direction of tajin. It's not nearly as aggressive as that and is a deliciously enjoyable cup, but for the flavor chasers out there, I would search for that note. Enjoy!

Brewing Recommendations

This coffee performs well under a variety of circumstances. Unlike a lot of other light roasts you may find a standard or even slightly coarse grind to be preferable. Test out a few different ratios of grind/dose and see what notes change!
